2024 Pigskin Picks of Profundity…Week 10

Ohio State (-4) at Penn State

The 6-1 Buckeyes are ranked 4th in the nation with only a one point loss to #1 Oregon staining their record. The unbeaten Nittany Lions are 3rd in the polls and have the home field. I think Penn St.’s schedule has been a bit more challenging, so they have earned respect from everyone except, it seems, the oddsmakers. Will they use that as fuel?? Perhaps. However, at the end of the day I believe the visiting favorites are probably just a little faster & more athletic. It’ll be tight, but I give a touchdown edge to Ohio St. Zach is expecting a low scoring defensive struggle and is…surprisingly…picking Ohio St.

My Pick: Ohio St.

Zach’s Pick: Ohio St.

Georgia (-16.5) vs. Florida

The NCAA schedule is rather prosaic this week, and we try to avoid games involving teams we just dealt with last week, so this mid-season “rivalry” game makes the cut. I put it like that because it hasn’t been much of a rivalry in recent years, with the 6-1 Bulldogs winning six of the last seven meetings. Meanwhile, the 4-3 Gators seem to be spinning their wheels until the powers-that-be pull the trigger on firing head coach Billy Napier. It’s a neutral site contest in Jacksonville, and I have no doubt Georgia will win, but can they cover?? Well, in those six games they won in the past seven years, their average margin of victory is 22 points…so I’m riding with the ‘Dawgs. Zach has observed improvement from Florida, but also feels as if Georgia is really hitting their stride.

My Pick: Georgia

Zach’s Pick: Georgia

Denver at Baltimore (-9.5)

I freakin’ hate the Ravens, but I’ll give them credit for building a good team. They aren’t hesitant to pull the trigger on a trade or sign an impact free agent. As a die hard Steelers fan I can admit that my team is leading the division thru smoke & mirrors, which probably isn’t sustainable thru an entire season. The task at hand for Baltimore is taking care of business at home against the 5-3 Broncos, who have already been way more successful than I thought they’d be. I’d be pleasantly surprised if Denver pulled off a huge upset, but will settle for moderately satisfied if they keep it close. Zach concurs.

My Pick: Denver

Zach’s Pick: Denver

Miami at Buffalo (-5.5)

The 6-2 Bills have a stranglehold on the AFC East, while the 2-5 Dolphins are struggling to equal last season’s playoff qualifying success. I don’t know that Buffalo is a Super Bowl caliber team, but they are certainly capable of easily handling business at home. Zach agrees.

My Pick: Buffalo

Zach’s Pick: Buffalo

Detroit at Green Bay (-1)

Holy cow, the 6-1 Lions opened up a can o’ whoopass on the Titans last week. Meanwhile, the 6-2 Packers are on a four game win streak and sit only a half game behind Detroit in the division. We’ve been doing this long enough to know that the de facto home field bump in the NFL is three points, so the fact that Green Bay is only favored by one is a nod to Detroit’s success…but it still feels disrespectful to the visitors. I believe they’ll see it that way and respond accordingly. Zach is looking forward to the game and believes in Lions coach Dan Campbell.

My Pick: Detroit

Zach’s Pick: Detroit

2024 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 6

Baseball playoffs have arrived & the hockey season is starting, but we’re all about football here. However, since the subject came up, I will opine that a Yankees World Series against the Dodgers or Phillies holds absolutely zero interest for me. It’s probably too much to ask, but a Royals/Tigers vs. Padres Series would be palatable. We’ll see. In the meantime I’ll continue to happily spend most of my weekends…vicariously…on the gridiron.

My Season: 19-14

Zach’s Season: 15-18

Michigan State at Oregon (-24)

This is the Friday night game on Fox, which I have quickly grown to love. That is probably a sad commentary on my life, but that’s okay. The 3-2 Spartans are unlikely to pose a serious threat to the unbeaten Ducks, but can they keep it respectable?? Oregon has only beaten one opponent by more than three touchdowns, while only Ohio St. has beaten Michigan St. by that much. It’s risky, but I’ll lean toward the home team winning by 15-20 points. Zach is a bit concerned by the points, but not concerned enough to agree with my assessment.

My Pick: Michigan St.

Zach’s Pick: Oregon

UCLA at Penn State (-27.5)

I am intrigued by these games with such a large point spread. How is that number arrived at?? What kind of analytics are used?? I know it’s not done haphazardly. At any rate, the Nittany Lions are undefeated and haven’t been challenged too much thus far. Conversely, the 1-3 Bruins have lost three consecutive games and need to rebound quickly before the season is a total debacle. If the game were being played in Pasadena I might consider that the underdogs could remain competitive, but in Happy Valley I think we will see complete domination. Zach doesn’t believe that Penn St.’s offense is built to be that dominant, so he thinks it’ll be slightly closer than four TDs.

My Pick: Penn St.

Zach’s Pick: UCLA

Michigan at Washington (-3)

It’s a National Championship rematch, and when these teams met in January the Wolverines won in dominating fashion. Of course, as this is college football, these are both far different teams than they were last season. They even have new head coaches. Michigan is off to a 4-1 start, with only a loss to Texas as a blemish. Meanwhile, the erratic Huskies are 3-2 and Michael Penix Jr. ain’t walking thru their door. Washington gets the home field bump, but I’m not buying it. The talking heads at NBC would love for this to be a Michigan-Washington 2023 redux and will probably try to hype it as such, but I think the visitors will achieve a fairly mundane “upset”. Zach is concerned about his Wolverines offensive ineptitude, opining that even I might be a better QB for them, which is hilarious for reasons very few will understand. Anyway, since Michigan defeated USC last month he believes they stand a chance to win out west.

My Pick: Michigan

Zach’s Pick: Michigan

Buffalo at Houston (-1)

Despite getting trucked by the Baltimore Ravens last weekend the 3-1 Bills have been more impressive than I anticipated. Conversely, the 3-1 seem underwhelming regardless of their record. Both teams are dealing with alot of injuries, with the status of several key players up in the air at the moment, which makes accurate prognostication nearly impossible. It’s a leap of faith either way, but I’m riding with the home team. Zach is expecting a close contest that comes down to the wire, and he has confidence in QB Josh Allen to lead Buffalo to a huge win on the road.

My Pick: Houston

Zach’s Pick: Buffalo

Las Vegas at Denver (-2.5)

Will receiver Davante Adams be traded before Sunday?? Probably not. Will he be traded at all?? We’ll see. Will he suit up for this game?? I don’t know. The 2-2 Raiders probably aren’t going to be too successful with Gardner Minshew at QB with or without Adams. The Broncos are also 2-2, with rookie QB Bo Nix taking his lumps. I’m not expecting an instant classic or even an entertaining game, but it should atleast be competitive. Denver’s home field is always promoted as daunting with the higher elevation and all that jazz, but that hasn’t seemed to translate into consistent success. I foresee a forgettable upset. Zach is a little more upbeat about the fun factor but agrees on the outcome.

My Pick: Las Vegas

Zach’s Pick: Las Vegas

2023 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 20

Houston at Indianapolis (-1.5)

The winner will be in the playoffs, while the loser begins their offseason program. When they met in Week 2 in Houston the Colts won pretty easily, but that feels like a lifetime ago. The Texans are clearly on an upward trajectory and I foresee a rather comfortable victory. Conversely, Zach likes RB Jonathan Taylor to lead the Colts rushing attack, enabling them to win with ball control.

My Pick: Houston

Zach’s Pick: Indianapolis

Cleveland at Cincinnati (-4.5)

There’s nothing at stake in the Battle of Ohio except pride & momentum. The Browns are playoff bound and locked into the 5th seed, which means they’ll probably face the winner of the AFC South. The Bengals will miss the playoffs after being in the AFC title game a year ago. Do the Browns rest their starters?? Probably. Is that enough for Cincy to finish their disappointing season on high note?? I think so. Zach believes in Cleveland’s new starting QB Joe Flacco and thinks he’ll have another big game.

My Pick: Cincinnati

Zach’s Pick: Cleveland

Atlanta at New Orleans (-4)

The winner could actually capture a division title…or be out of the playoffs altogether. If Tampa wins this game is meaningless, but if they lose then the winner here gets a trip to the postseason. The Falcons got a home win the first time these teams met a month ago, but I don’t believe they can replicate that success on the road. Zach thinks QB Derek Carr will lead New Orleans to a big win.

My Pick: New Orleans

Zach’s Pick: New Orleans

Jacksonville (-3.5) at Tennessee

The Titans can only play the role of spoiler. If the Jags win they secure a division title, and if they lose they’ll need a couple other dominoes to fall the right way to sneak into the 7th playoff seed. Jacksonville won easily when the two teams met in November, but that was at home. Tennessee now has the home field, though with nothing to play for and rookie QB Will Levis banged up the deck is stacked against them. The favorites will likely have QB Trevor Lawrence back in the lineup, which should be enough. As a Steelers fan I hate it because we need the Jaguars to lose, but I have to be intellectually honest. Zach has faith in the Titans’ rushing attack and thinks they will control time of possession & the line of scrimmage en route to an upset.

My Pick: Jacksonville

Zach’s Pick: Tennessee

Tampa Bay (-5.5) at Carolina

If the Bucs win they’re headed to the postseason as division champs. Lose and they go home. The Panthers are even worse this year than last, but traded away what will now be the #1 overall pick to choose QB Bryce Young in last year’s draft with the top pick. Carolina seems to be a poorly run organization and will need to hit a home run with their next coaching hire. Anything can happen in the NFL, but this feels like a rather low hurdle for Tampa to clear. Zach agrees.

My Pick: Tampa Bay

Zach’s Pick: Tampa Bay

Seattle (-3) at Arizona

The 4-12 Cards are finishing up another miserable season and will spend the next several months asking themselves alot of questions. Conversely, the Seahawks will play in the postseason if they win and the Green Bay Packers lose. Obviously the only thing they can control is what they do, but it might not be as easy as most would assume. Arizona upset Philly on the road last weekend, so can they play that well at home?? Perhaps…but the smart money is on the favorites. Zach opines that QB Geno Smith is playing well right now and believes that’ll be enough.

My Pick: Seattle

Zach’s Pick: Seattle

Dallas (-13.5) at Washington

The Cowboys were gifted a win last weekend by an incompetent officiating crew, and now they can secure a division title with another victory. The Commanders are another team that might be making significant changes in the offseason, but they’d love to finish on a high note by knocking Dallas down a peg. I don’t think that’ll happen, but I do believe it’ll be a surprisingly close game. Zach concurs.

My Pick: Washington

Zach’s Pick: Washington

LA Rams at San Francisco (-3.5)

The Niners have already clinched the NFC’s top seed & a first round bye, so I suspect they’ll sit their starters for all or most of the game. The Rams have clinched a wildcard berth. When these teams met in Los Angeles in Week 2 ‘Frisco won by a touchdown, but much has changed for both teams since then, making comparisons impossible. My vibe is the game means more to the Rams, with the home team having their eyes on a bigger prize. Zach doesn’t believe ‘Frisco will lose even if they rest their best players. They are his Super Bowl favorites.

My Pick: LA Rams

Zach’s Pick: San Francisco

Philadelphia (-6) at NY Giants

The Eagles are playing for a division title despite losing 4 out of their last 5 games. Everyone is trying to figure out what exactly has gone wrong in the past month, and the powers-that-be in that locker room need to fix it quickly. The Giants have really gone off the rails this season and have nothing to play for, but neither do they have anything to lose. I don’t know if Philly can recover their mojo enough to get to another Super Bowl, but I think they’ll find a way to win this game. Zach agrees.

My Pick: Philadelphia

Zach’s Pick: Philadelphia

Buffalo (-3) at Miami

Sunday night has the best game last. The winner will be division champions. The Dolphins are in the playoffs no matter what. The Bills are in with a win, but would need some help if they lose. Miami is battling the injury bug, including the loss of linebacker Bradley Chubb with a torn ACL, which is why the oddsmakers like Buffalo on the road. Everything is pointing toward an emphatic victory for the favorites, but I think the Dolphins are ready to rise up & shock the world. Conversely, Zach likes QB Josh Allen to lead his team on a late, game winning drive.

My Pick: Miami

Zach’s Pick: Buffalo

2023 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 18

Buffalo (-11.5) at LA Chargers

Lots of folks were ready to give up on the Bills, but since handing the Cowboys a three TD beatdown it’s funny to watch people jump back on the bandwagon. They’re still not going to win the division, but watch out if Buffalo earns a wild card. Conversely, the Chargers have already fired their coach and lost QB Justin Herbert to broken finger. LA winning would be an epic stunner…but can they keep it close?? Zach believes that the underdogs could possibly play better than they have all season under new leadership, but it won’t be enough. I agree with that assessment.

My Pick: Buffalo

Zach’s Pick: Buffalo

Cleveland at Houston (-2.5)

Thanks to close victories by both teams last week the chances of the Steelers getting into the playoffs are slim to none, with slim warming up the car. Credit where it is due to the Browns, who have fared better than I expected, although I think they’d get beaten like a drum against any postseason opponent. The Texans still have an opportunity to win their division, but have work left to do. This is a monumental Christmas Eve battle, and I think the home team gets the job done as long as rookie QB CJ Stroud clears concussion protocol. Conversely, Zach gives the nod to Cleveland on the strength of their defense.

My Pick: Houston

Zach’s Pick: Cleveland

Seattle (-2.5) at Tennessee

The Seahawks got a monster win over Philadelphia Monday night but still have a few hurdles to clear in the NFC playoff scrum thanks to losing 5 out of 6 before beating the Eagles. The Titans have to settle for the role of spoiler, having lost two of their last three, both in overtime, meaning they haven’t given up and are still battling for victories. It’s a classic trap game and nothing would surprise me, but I think Geno Smith will be back under center for the favorites and they’ll remain in playoff contention. Zach concurs.

My Pick: Seattle

Zach’s Pick: Seattle

Las Vegas at Kansas City (-10)

The Chiefs should still easily win the AFC West, but they clearly have alot more doubters than anyone could’ve imagined as recently as Halloween. Meanwhile, the Raiders laid a smackdown on the Chargers that forced that organization to fire both the head coach & general manager. On paper it doesn’t look very appetizing, but could it be yet another trap game?? The home field is significant, and I’m not quite ready to toss KC into the trash bin. The points concern Zach, and he feels like the Chiefs have been playing down to their competition…but he doesn’t believe a Christmas miracle is in the cards for Vegas.

My Pick: Kansas City

Zach’s Pick: Kansas City

Baltimore at San Francisco (-5.5)

As much as I hate to admit it the Ravens are firing on all cylinders and might be the best team in the AFC. They’ve won four in a row, while the Niners are riding a six game winning steak. Could this be a Christmas Night Super Bowl preview?? It’s possible. I foresee a low scoring, well played slugfest with a couple of WOW plays on offense but even more impressive gems from both defenses. Something like 20-13, with the home team continuing their momentum. Zach sees ‘Frisco as the more complete & balanced team.

My Pick: San Francisco

Zach’s Pick: San Francisco

2023 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 16

Detroit (-3) at Chicago

ESPN talking head Chris Berman use to call the NFC North The Norris Division, which is a now obsolete hockey reference. It looks like the 9-3 Lions will cruise to their first division title since 1993. Conversely, Bears fans need to stop trying to make Justin Fields happen. Perhaps he’ll evolve into a serviceable NFL quarterback, but he’s not a superstar and certainly needs a change of scenery. 4-8 Chicago has the home field, but I don’t think it matters. Zach agrees and considers Detroit a Super Bowl favorite.

My Pick: Detroit

Zach’s Pick: Detroit

LA Rams at Baltimore (-7)

I didn’t have high hopes for the Rams coming into the season, although I did opine that it was possible they could figure out what went wrong last year and fix it. At 6-6 the jury is still out, but they have looked decent at times. The 9-3 Ravens are living up to the hype thus far, much to the chagrin of Steeler Nation. With that in mind I have decided to lead with my heart instead of my head. Can the Rams pull off a big upset on the road?? I sure hope so. Conversely, Zach is more objective and considers Baltimore to be another Super Bowl favorite.

My Pick: LA Rams

Zach’s Pick: Baltimore

Seattle at San Francisco (-10.5)

Okay, I was wrong about the Niners’ QB situation. Brock Purdy has a firm grip on the job and his team doesn’t seem to have any prominent weaknesses. It looks like 9-3 ‘Frisco will win their third division title in four years. At 6-6 the Seahawks are still in the fight, but they need to turn it up a notch. When these teams met just a couple of weeks ago it wasn’t particularly competitive, and I don’t foresee much changing now. Zach believes the 49ers may be the most complete team in the league and thinks they’ll handle business.

My Pick: San Francisco

Zach’s Pick: San Francisco

Buffalo at Kansas City (-2.5)

In my season preview I opined that things wouldn’t be easy for the Bills this year, but I had no idea they’d be 6-6 and struggling to remain in wildcard contention. Almost as surprising is the recent struggles of the 8-4 Chiefs, who have lost three of their last five games. They still have a solid division lead, but their status as Super Bowl favorites is certainly in doubt, and they could struggle to make it to the AFC Title game. KC’s home field is amongst the most hostile in the league, so I believe they’ll escape with a close victory. Zach also predicts a close contest, but foresees Buffalo getting the mild upset.

My Pick: Kansas City

Zach’s Pick: Buffalo

Philadelphia at Dallas (-3.5)

When these teams met in Philly in early November the home team used a big third quarter to launch themselves to a five point win. The Eagles had looked rather sharp until getting blasted by San Francisco last week, while the Cowboys are riding the wave of a four game winning streak. The “experts” are slaves of the current moment and will view the game differently, but I still think Philadelphia is a better team. Zach believes the underdogs will rebound nicely from last week’s debacle and get a big upset on the road Sunday night.

My Pick: Philadelphia

Zach’s Pick: Philadelphia

2023 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 13

Wake Forest at Notre Dame (-24.5)

It’s the Sam Hartman Bowl!! The Fighting Irish QB spent five seasons in Winston-Salem under center for the Demon Deacons and became the ACC’s all-time leader in touchdown passes. Wake is 4-6, so they need to win out to become bowl eligible, while the home team is 7-3 and will probably end up playing in a top tier New Year’s bowl game because that’s how college football seems to work these days. Zach is concerned about the points, but he’s feeling frisky.

Colorado at Washington State (-4.5)

The talking heads have mostly stopped paying attention to Coach Prime since the Buffaloes are 4-6 and have lost three in a row. Having said that, the Cougars share the same abysmal record and have lost six straight games. Yikes. This is a Friday night game on FS1, which doesn’t bode well for ratings. The Vibes are telling me that the Buffs are desperate enough for the additional attention a post-season appearance brings, so they’ll be motivated to become bowl eligible.

North Carolina at Clemson (-6.5)

It hasn’t been a great year for the 6-4 Tigers, but they’ve won two in a row and would love to finish strong, building momentum for the future in the process. Meanwhile, the 8-2 Tar Heels hit a snag with two close losses at the end of October, which essentially killed their conference title aspirations. Zach isn’t necessarily predicting an upset, but he foresees a close contest.

Appalachian State at James Madison (-11.5)

ESPN will be on hand for Gameday, and as someone who graduated from a school that took the leap from 1-AA/FCS to playing in a Group of Five FBS conference I understand how much that means to these programs. The 6-4 Mountaineers aren’t going to win the Sun Belt or get to ten wins as had become fairly commonplace until last season, but they’d surely love to go bowling. Conversely, the undefeated Dukes have sparked a debate about an outdated NCAA rule that precludes them from post-season participation because this is only their second year at the FBS level. Meanwhile, last year a 5-7 team got a bowl bid, and nowadays players transfer more frequently than most people change underwear. Make it make sense. Anyway, I think the home crowd & all the hype will help the home team, but the points are just too much. JMU gets the victory, but they’ll win by 7-10 points.

Oklahoma State (-7) at Houston

The 7-3 Cowboys still have an opportunity to get to the Big 12 title game, but questions remain after the beatdown they received last week at UCF. As for the 4-6 Cougars…well, it’s their first season in the conference, and they’ve proven they can hang despite their record. They need to win out to be bowl eligible. Zach doesn’t think that’s going to happen though, predicting the favorites to grind out a hard fought victory.

Kansas State (-7.5) at Kansas

The Battle of Kansas is normally more interesting on the basketball court, but with both teams at 7-3 and not mathematically out of the Big 12 title hunt this could be a fascinating game. You may recall that I had high hopes for the Wildcats, but losing at Missouri back in September squashed those expectations. They did push Texas to triple OT a couple weeks ago before losing, which deserves a tip o’ the cap. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks came out of the gate strong but have rode the roller coaster the last two months. It’s a 7pm kickoff on Saturday night and a chance for the folks at FS1 to present a better game than the night before. I won’t be watching because I have plans, but I think the home team gets it done, or atleast stays really close the whole way.

Cincinnati at Baltimore (-3)

The AFC North is very much up for grabs, with the 5-4 Bengals battling back into contention after a rough start. The 7-3 Ravens are a confusing team, occasionally looking like the championship contenders that the talking heads promote them as being, but sometimes snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. That’s exactly what Zach thinks will happen, with Joe Burrow leading Cincy to a big win on the last possession of the game.

NY Giants at Washington (-10)

The Giants season has been torpedoed by injuries. At 2-8 they’re in the running to snag the top pick in April’s NFL Draft, which could force them to ponder whether or not QB Daniel Jones, currently on the shelf with a torn ACL, is really their guy. The 4-6 Commanders have shown occasional signs of life, but they could find themselves in the same boat, having to decide if QB Sam Howell is the future. As for this game, Washington isn’t a dominating enough team to beat anyone by double digits.

NY Jets at Buffalo (-7)

What’s up with the Bills?? They’ve lost 3 out of the last four games and just fired their offensive coordinator (while Steelers fans everywhere shake our heads in amazement). The Jets have shown potential but are inconsistent. Neither team is out of division title contention, but they need to shape up rather quickly or Miami will win the AFC East easily. Zach has lost faith in Buffalo and thinks they’d be fortunate to win at all, but if it happens it’ll be by the skin of their teeth.

Philadelphia at Kansas City (-3)

Is it a Super Bowl preview?? Possibly. Both teams should be rested & healthy follow a bye week, and the viewers of Monday Night Football will reap the rewards. The 8-1 Eagles haven’t blown anyone out, but perhaps that’s because they’ve known how good they are and haven’t needed to exert maximum effort. The Chiefs are 7-2 and will cruise to their eighth consecutive division title, but they’ve shown chinks in the armor. Whichever team establishes a ground game, dominates time of possession, and plays better defense will be victorious, and I believe the visiting underdogs are up to the task.

2023 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 7

Kansas State (-11.5) at Oklahoma State

We’re leaning heavily into the Big 12 this week, starting with a team I had high hopes for in the preseason. At 3-1, with only a close loss to Missouri blemishing their record, the Wildcats still have an opportunity to meet my lofty expectations. Conversely, the 2-2 Cowboys have lost two in a row and need to stop their downward spiral immediately. This is the prime time Saturday night game on ESPN, so someone somewhere must believe it’ll be fun to watch. The points concern me a little bit because I’m not sure the favorites are as elite as I’d hoped while the underdogs probably aren’t as terrible as the numbers might indicate. Having said that, anyone who has followed us here thru the years knows that I’m loyal to my preseason opinions until they’re proven wrong, so I’m riding with K-State to validate my prognostication with a statement victory. Zach isn’t impressed by either team but thinks the favorites have a more balanced attack that will lead to a comfortable win.

My Pick: Kansas St.

Zach’s Pick: Kansas St.

Texas Tech at Baylor (-1.5)

At 2-3 the Red Raiders look like fighting for bowl eligibility might be their ceiling. Ditto for the 2-3 Bears, who won 12 games & beat Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl just a couple of seasons ago. This feels like a pivotal game that could right the ship of the winner while tossing the loser deeper into the abyss. I have no idea what to expect and usually factor the home field rather heavily into these kinds of decisions, but The Vibes are gently nudging me toward Tech. Zach likes Baylor’s toughness to make the difference in a high scoring affair decided deep into the 4th quarter.

My Pick: Texas Tech

Zach’s Pick: Baylor

Oklahoma vs. Texas (-6.5)

I still call it the Red River Shootout even if the sports media has become too woke to do so. It’s the last time they’ll meet as Big 12 rivals, but unlike so many other great traditions that have been destroyed by conference realignment these teams will continue to battle annually as members of the SEC. After last season’s 6-7 abomination I had no expectations of the Sooners, but thus far they’re 5-0 & proving me wrong. I did have a reasonably high opinion of the Longhorns, but at 5-0 & ranked in the Top 5 they’ve outdone themselves. It’s a neutral site contest at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, with a Noon kickoff. It feels like Texas has much more at stake, with a possible playoff berth in their future if all goes well. Oklahoma looks to have too many obstacles in their path to work themselves into playoff contention, but ruining their opponent’s opportunity would be sweet. I’m looking forward to a real dandy, and think the favorites have enough firepower to win by a touchdown. Zach believes the total points may end up close to 100, with the underdogs scoring a mildly surprising upset.

My Pick: Texas

Zach’s Pick: Oklahoma

Jacksonville vs. Buffalo (-5.5)

I expected both teams to be playoff contenders, but so far I’ve been underwhelmed. I thought the 2-2 Jags would be the bandwagon everyone would jump on, but they lost a game & that spot to the Houston Texans. Similarly, the 3-1 Bills are atop their division, but share the lead with the Miami Dolphins, who have received a lot more buzz. This is a 9:30am kickoff in London on the NFL Network, the second consecutive week for Jacksonville in Merry Old England (they beat Atlanta last Sunday). That gives them a slight advantage in my mind, assuming they just stayed overseas instead of flying back & forth across the pond again. It would be an attention grabbing upset, and possible changing of the guard in the AFC. Zach thinks Buffalo has figured things out after a sluggish beginning to their season.

My Pick: Jacksonville

Zach’s Pick: Buffalo

New Orleans at New England (-1.5)

I feel like this is a must-win for both teams. The 2-2 Saints came out of the gate strong before dropping two straight. Injuries have been an issue. The 1-3 Patriots have folks questioning the perceived genius of allegedly one of the greatest coaches of all time. I could’ve told you years ago that was poppycock, but they kept winning Super Bowls by any means necessary. Witnessing New England’s implosion is delicious fun, and I wouldn’t mind seeing N’Awlins beat them by triple digits. Unfortunately the visitors aren’t that good. Are they good enough to squeak by in a close contest though?? I hope so. Conversely, Zach doesn’t thing Darth Belichick will lose two games in a row. He foresees them taking pressure off whoever starts at QB by establishing a strong running game.

My Pick: New Orleans

Zach’s Pick: New England

2022 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 20

Folks, before we get down to business let’s address the elephant in the room. Zach & I both love football. We’ve both been hardcore Steelers fans our entire lives (my life being just a bit longer than his). Once, when I was a boy in the early 80’s, Pittsburgh lost the last game of the season (I’m not sure which year) and missed the playoffs. I cried like a baby. There are few things more enjoyable for me than vegging out in front of the TV on autumn Saturdays to watch college football from morning until the last west coast game ends around 1am, then watching “seven hours of commercial free football” on NFL RedZone Sunday afternoon. I started doing these picks several years ago because it combines a few things that I love: writing, football, and acting as if I know what the hell I’m talking about. Having said all of that, we are well aware that there’s a real world out there full of serious issues & life changing decisions. Football is usually an escape from those unpleasant realities, but it’s not breaking news to most that football & real life collided a few days ago. I’m not going to offer any medical opinions or hot takes, just sincere good mojo for Damar Hamlin, best wishes for the Buffalo Bills as they move thru the playoffs, and a tip of the cap to coaches, officials, league brass, & even TV talking heads who handled an unprecedented situation in a mostly professional & fair manner.

Okay, so…we are tied coming into this final week. Zach was 3-1 last weekend, while I was 1-3. It goes without saying that the Bills-Bengals game we picked doesn’t count since they didn’t finish it. For our finale we are doing bonus picks…obviously…with each game having some kind of playoff implication. Watch the games. Enjoy them. Don’t feel guilty for doing so. But also don’t forget to call, text, or visit friends & family and tell them you love them. Distractions are fantastic, but reality can be pretty cool as well.

My Season: 54-59

Zach’s Season: 54-59

Tennessee at Jacksonville (-6.5)

This is a Saturday night game on ESPN, and Tennessee will have had a couple extra days of rest since they played on Thursday last week. The winner wins the AFC South. The Jags could win it outright, while the Titans have a better divisional record & would win the tiebreaker. Theoretically Jacksonville could still earn a wildcard berth even with a loss, but too many dominoes would have to fall perfectly, so it’s not a realistic scenario. I told you before the season that “the Jags could be headed in the right direction”, but they have exceeded expectations. The Titans have lost six in a row and simply have too many injuries. Even if RB Derrick Henry plays & looks good I don’t believe they’ll get the job done. Zach concurs.

My Pick: Jacksonville (21-13)

Z’s Pick: Jacksonville (28-17)

Baltimore at Cincinnati (-7)

I’m not sure how the NFL is going to handle this situation. Assuming the “postponed” game is not made up the Bengals will have played one less game, so if they lose they’d be 11-5 and the Ravens would be 11-6. However, in that scenario Baltimore would’ve won both meetings this season, and I suppose it’d make sense that they be declared division champions. Cincinnati could make it easy by winning the game and clearly earning a division title. QB Lamar Jackson has missed the last four games with a knee injury, and it is unknown if he’ll be available for the underdogs this week. It feels like Cincy is peaking at the right time after winning seven in a row. Who am I to question Big Mo(mentum)?? Zach sees it as a contrast of styles…Baltimore’s ball control offense vs. the Bengals’ big play potential…and he thinks the defending AFC champs have a great shot to make another deep run.

My Pick: Cincinnati  (27-17)

Z’s Pick: Cincinnati (35-20)

Seattle (-6.5) at LA Rams

The Seahawks need to win and hope Green Bay loses. That would get them the 7th seed in the NFC. A week ago I had too much faith that the defending champion Rams would rekindle some of that fire from last season, but instead they got blasted by the Chargers. Lesson learned. They may not make it far, but it’d be nice to see QB Geno Smith lead Seattle into the postseason. Zach agrees.

My Pick: Seattle  (31-17)

Z’s Pick: Seattle (31-10)

New England at Buffalo (-7.5)

The Steelers need New England to lose (seems like old times). That’s good enough for me. Hopefully by the time this one kicks off the outlook for Damar Hamlin will be more encouraging and the Bills will be invigorated to kick ass in his honor. Zach hasn’t lost faith in Pats’ QB Mac Jones, but thinks the rest of the team is a mess.

My Pick: Buffalo (28-10)

Z’s Pick: Buffalo (28-7)

NY Giants at Philadelphia (-14)

Much to my surprise the Giants are playoff bound, and they are locked into the 6th seed. Philly is headed to the playoffs too, but they would prefer to be the NFC East champions, the conference’s top seed, and have a first round bye. That makes this a must win. Having said that, the points are redonkulous. These are not the Giants that I predicted to go 1-16 👀…these Giants are 9-6-1 and want to go to the postseason with momentum. They might not win, but it’ll be closer than two TDs. Zach is on the same page.

My Pick: NY Giants   (21-30)

Z’s Pick: NY Giants  (20-24)

Dallas (-5.5) at Washington

This rivalry was more fun when it was Cowboys vs. Indians. Anyway, Dallas is also battling for a division crown & the NFC’s #1 seed, but they have to win first. The Commanders were eliminated from playoff contention last weekend, but I have to assume they’d relish the role of spoiler. I don’t have much faith in the Cowboys making a deep playoff run, but I’d be surprised if they don’t go to DC & handle business. Zach concurs.

My Pick: Dallas  (34-14)

Z’s Pick: Dallas (28-13)

NY Jets at Miami {even}

It should be one of the most intriguing games of the day, even with both teams limping a bit. The Jets’ quarterback situation has been a mess, and I don’t think it matters whether Zach Wilson, Mike White, or Joe Flacco is the starter. Similarly, the Dolphins have seen starter Tua Tagovailoa battle concussion issues and lost backup Teddy Bridgewater to a finger injury. Third stringer Skylar Thompson was a 7th round pick out of Kansas St. and certainly looked like it last week (Thompson was chosen 15 spots ahead of 49ers QB Brock Purdy…think Miami would like to have a do-over??). There’s a chance Bridgewater might be available, which could help the home team. With so many variables in play it comes down to this for me: my Steelers need the Dolphins to lose. Zach agrees.

My Pick: NY Jets  (16-14)

Z’s Pick: NY Jets (17-14)

Detroit at Green Bay (-4.5)

I said five months ago that “the surprise of the division might be Detroit”, and here we are with the Lions not only having an opportunity to snag a playoff berth, but eliminate the Packers in the process. For Green Bay it is simple…win & they’re in. Detroit has to win and hope that Seattle loses. This is the Sunday night contest on NBC, so the Lions will know the outcome of the Seahawks game by the time they kick off. I said a couple of weeks ago that “battling Aaron Rodgers with his back against a wall is dangerous”. The Pack has won four in a row and I don’t think that stops now. Detroit has a bright future and should be congratulated on their significant improvement, but I think their season ends on The Frozen Tundra. Not only does Zach believe Green Bay will win this game, but he thinks they are a legit Super Bowl contender.

My Pick: Green Bay  (27-20)

Z’s Pick: Green Bay (28-20)

Y’all may have noticed that, for the first time ever, we predicted final scores. That’s because we agreed on the outcome of all eight games, meaning that we’re going to end up tied no matter what. Therefore, we are doing a “closest to the hole” tiebreaker. The lesser point differential for each game (regardless of the outcome) wins that game. Zach agreed to those terms, and I think it’ll make watching each game even more fun.

2022 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 19

We’re in the home stretch, and there are a few things to consider. My season lead is only two games. Razor thin. Both of us are under .500, and though it won’t be easy finishing above that mark is always a goal. The NFL playoff picture has become pretty clear, though there are a couple of spots up for grabs and seeding to be determined. As always we strive to offer some variety and not pick games involving the same teams every week, but that becomes difficult late on the season since we logically focus on playoff drama. At any rate, Happy New Year Manoverse. I’m not into making resolutions & don’t believe everything is magically different on January 1st than it was on December 31st. However, I do think there’s something to be said for fresh starts & new beginnings. Hope is a powerful thing, so if you’re heading into 2023 with positivity & confidence I wish you all the best.

My Season: 53-56

Zach’s Season: 51-58

Dallas (-10) at Tennessee

I really thought the Titans would have double digit victories & win their division comfortably. Instead they are 7-8 and in a dogfight to even make the playoffs. Conversely, the Cowboys are 11-4 & will make the playoffs, though the Eagles will win the division. Tennessee has lost five in a row & QB Ryan Tannehill was lost to an ankle injury a couple of weeks ago, so it’s an uphill climb to be sure. Having said that, I’m not buying what the Cowboys are selling and haven’t since Day 1. They may win the game, but it’ll be a lot closer than the oddsmakers believe. Zach is feeling frisky and has more faith in Dallas QB Dak Prescott than the Titans defense.

My Pick: Tennessee

Z’s Pick: Dallas

Jacksonville (-4) at Houston

No one expected much from either club coming into the season, but the Jags are in the playoff hunt, and despite the Texans probably having a shot at the #1 overall pick in next year’s draft they have become a team no one wants to play after beating Tennessee and giving both Dallas & Kansas City all they could handle. I like the upward trajectory Jacksonville is on their way up, but I don’t believe they’re there quite yet. Houston has embraced the role of spoiler, and I think they’ll get the job done on their home turf. Zach thinks it’ll be close, but believes the visitors will overcome all obstacles late in the second half.

My Pick: Houston

Z’s Pick: Jacksonville

Cleveland at Washington (-2.5)

If the Commanders win their final two games they’ll be in the playoffs. They won’t be mathematically eliminated with a loss, but it would certainly complicate things. Conversely, the 6-9 Browns are exactly who I thought they were. I foresee an easy win for the home team.  Zach concurs.

My Pick: Washington

Z’s Pick: Washington

LA Rams vs. LA Chargers (-6.5)

The Battle of Los Angeles sure would be alot more fun if the Rams were better than 5-10. Meanwhile, the 9-6 Chargers have clinched a wildcard berth. With nothing to play for except pride I think the defending Super Bowl champs will somehow find a way to win. Conversely, Zach thinks the Rams have too many injuries to key personnel to stay competitive.

My Pick: LA Rams

Z’s Pick: LA Chargers

Buffalo (-1) at Cincinnati

Both teams will playing in the postseason, but that doesn’t mean this game is meaningless. The Bills are battling the Chiefs for the AFC’s top seed & a first round bye, while the Bengals will either win the AFC North or earn a wildcard berth. It’s basically a pick ‘em, and think I like Buffalo given the revenge factor dating back to last years conference title game. Zach boldly predicts a game winning drive led by Joe Burrow, ending with a dramatic score with under a minute remaining.

My Pick: Buffalo

Z’s Pick: Cincinnati

2022 PIGSKIN PICKS OF PROFUNDITY…WEEK 17

Okay, so…I’m running out of time in a busy week. As usual it was a bad idea to pick a Thursday night game, but it is what it is. Both of us are still under .500, so hopefully we can improve on that this weekend. Keep an eye out for our college bowl picks as well. Enjoy.

My Season: 49-50

Zach’s Season:46-53

San Francisco (-3.5) at Seattle

Is it possible that Mr. Irrelevant could become the next big time NFL quarterback?? That might be a tad optimistic, but Brock Purdy is impressing people in ‘Frisco thus far. At 7-6 the Seahawks have been far better than I anticipated, thanks on part to QB Geno Smith. Still, they are a couple of games behind the Niners in the division, so this feels like a must win. I think the home field is huge and will rattle Purdy. Conversely, despite their quarterback woes, Zach sees ‘Frisco as being on another level right now.

My Pick: Seattle

Z’s Pick: San Francisco

Miami at Buffalo (-7.5)

The talking heads are once again questioning Tua Tagovailoa, who has struggled the past two games. Conversely, though they haven’t been perfect, few are doubting Buffalo’s Super Bowl credentials. Inclement weather could be a factor, but that still favors the Bills. Despite believing they’ve looked a bit sluggish Zach still thinks Buffalo will overcome the Dolphins’ speed at the skill positions on their way to a dominant win.

My Pick: Buffalo

Z’s Pick: Buffalo

NY Giants at Washington (-4.5)

Neither team is winning the division, but I suppose one or the other could earn a wildcard. I have been surprised by the Giants’ relative success, but I still think Washington is a slightly better team. Zach thinks it’s a pretty even matchup, and he likes New York to snag a close win.

My Pick: Washington

Z’s Pick: NY Giants

Tennessee at LA Chargers (-3)

The Titans will win the AFC South unless they completely collapse down the stretch. The Chargers got a huge win last Sunday night and are certainly in play for a wildcard. Can they get two victories in a row?? I don’t believe so. Ball control is important…Tennessee wins in the trenches. Zach concurs.

My Pick: Tennessee

Z’s Pick: Tennessee

Detroit at NY Jets (-1)

I told you the Lions would pleasantly surprise people this year, and I also said that the Jets were on the rise but aren’t there quite yet. Both assessments have proven accurate. I don’t even know who’s playing quarterback for the home team this week though, and that’s an issue. I’m predicting a dominant Detroit performance. Zach agrees.

My Pick: Detroit

Z’s Pick: Detroit
